“I felt a strong jolt which lasted for a few seconds,” Baldev Chand, a Chandigarh resident who lives in a flat on the second floor, said.
Ajay Kumar, who lives on the 11th floor of a residential society in Zirakpur, Punjab, said, “The tremors lasted for a few seconds. We thought of rushing down but the tremors stopped soon.”
Residents in several areas of Jammu and Kashmir reported feeling the tremors, though there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties at the time of writing. People in affected areas briefly moved out of buildings as a precaution.
The Afghanistan-Tajikistan border lies in a geologically active zone where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates interact, often resulting in seismic disturbances that are felt across a wide region, including parts of South Asia.
