‘Very warm and engaging’: PM Modi holds call with Trump amid bilateral trade talks

Amid ongoing India-US trade talks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump have had a ‘very warm and engaging’ conversation.

Amid ongoing India-US trade talks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held a “very warm and engaging” conversation with US President Donald Trump.

“We reviewed the progress in our bilateral relations and discussed regional and international developments. India and the US will continue to work together for global peace, stability and prosperity,” Modi further said in a post on X.

The Modi-Trump call took place at a time when a delegation led US Deputy Trade Representative Rick Switzer is in India for trade talks.

Previously, it has been reported that these talks were aimed at reaching a bilateral trade agreement by the end of the month. It has also been reported that the final approval for any deal would come after an understanding at the political level.

Trump has slapped 50 per cent tariffs on India — the highest in the world. His tariffs and the broader approach to India has plunged the bilateral relationship to the lowest point in decades. But there have been signs lately that there has been some progress in mending the ties.

Trump has indicated he could reduce tariffs but his signals have been mixed as he has also suggested imposing fresh tariffs on Indian exports like rice.
