The BJP on Friday secured a majority in the Maharashtra Nanded-Waghala City Municipal Corporation elections, securing 45 of the 81 seats in a stronghold long dominated by the Congress. The AIMIM finished second with 15 seats. The Congress, which controlled the civic body during the previous term, won only ten seats, while its ally, the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), secured five. Despite having two MLAs from the city, the Shiv Sena managed just four seats. The NCP won one seat, and an independent candidate also emerged victorious. Voting for 81 corporators across 20 wards took place on Thursday, with counting beginning at 10 am on Friday. 28 other municipal corporations in Maharashtra, including Mumbai’s cash-rich BMC, also went to polls on Thursday.Except for one term, the municipal corporation had been under Congress control since its formation. In the 2017 elections, the grand old party had dominated, winning 76 of the 81 seats.(With PTI inputs)
