‘Only God knows how many parts Pakistan will be divided into’: Rajnath Singh on Khawaja Asif's Kolkata threat

India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has hit back sharply at Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif’s statement, warning that any attempt by Pakistan to threaten Bengal would have consequences far more severe than the 1971 war that split Pakistan into two nations.

India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has hit back sharply at Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif’s statement, warning that any attempt by Pakistan to threaten Bengal would have consequences far more severe than the 1971 war that split Pakistan into two nations.

Singh’s remarks came after Asif made a provocative statement threatening to strike Kolkata if India carried out what he called a “false-flag operation.” “If India attempts another false-flag operation, then, God willing, we will take it to Kolkata,” Asif had said.

Responding to Asif’s statement, Rajnath Singh told news agency ANI, “Pakistan’s defence minister should not give such a provocative statement. 55 years ago they suffered the consequences when Pakistan was divided into two parts. If they try to cast an eye in Bengal, only God knows how many parts Pakistan will be divided into this time.”

A reminder of 1971

Singh’s reference to “55 years ago” was a reminder of the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war, in which India’s military intervention led to the liberation of Bangladesh, then East Pakistan.

The war also saw the surrender of over 90,000 Pakistani troops. The 1971 war remains one of the biggest military defeats in modern history. By invoking 1971, Singh sent an unambiguous message: India’s response to any future aggression would be even more overwhelming.

Not the first warning

This is not the first time Rajnath Singh has issued a stern warning to Islamabad. Earlier, the Defence Minister said that any future misadventure by Pakistan would invite unprecedented and decisive action by India.

The exchange comes at a time of heightened tensions between the two countries, with both sides trading sharp words at the political and military levels. India has consistently maintained that it will not tolerate provocations, while warning that the cost of any aggression would be far higher than Pakistan may anticipate.

Singh’s remarks underline India’s firm stance against any perceived threat to its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
