IndiGo has established the only direct air link between India and Reunion Island with a new thrice-weekly service from Chennai.
IndiGo has officially launched a direct flight service between Chennai and Reunion Island, marking a significant milestone as the only non-stop air link operated by an Indian carrier to the French overseas territory.
The inaugural flight, which took place on 29 April, signals a strategic expansion for the airline into the western Indian Ocean. The new route is expected to bolster tourism, trade, and cultural exchange, while providing a critical link for the substantial Indian diaspora residing on the island.
Flight schedule and operational strategy
The service operates three times weekly, with flights scheduled for Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Utilising fuel-efficient Airbus A320 aircraft, flight 6E 1871 is scheduled to depart Chennai at 12:20 pm, arriving in Reunion at 5:10 pm local time. The return journey, flight 6E 1872, leaves at 6:10 pm and returns to Chennai at 2:10 am the following morning.
Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, emphasised the strategic value of the new destination, stating the launch adds a distinctive destination to the airline’s expanding global footprint. He further noted that the direct connectivity improves convenience for leisure travellers, business passengers and the Indian diaspora.
Tourism and diaspora demand
Reunion Island is renowned for its diverse ecological wonders, including Unesco listed national parks, volcanic peaks, and rainforests. The island offers a variety of adventure activities such as canyoning, paragliding, and whale watching. Beyond leisure, the route is expected to see high demand from the 300,000-strong Indian origin community on the island, who account for more than a third of the total population.
Experts anticipate the route will cater to a wide range of travel needs, including business, medical, wellness, and religious tourism. As a French territory, the island is also positioning itself as a hub for luxury and sustainable tourism, alongside developing its infrastructure for corporate meetings and events.
Integration into India’s aviation hub strategy
The Chennai to Reunion Island route is also aligned with India’s aviation growth strategy, where metro cities such as Chennai are being positioned as global gateways under the hub-and-spoke model. This model aims to consolidate international traffic through major Indian hubs, enhancing global connectivity and boosting inbound tourism.
The direct service is expected to enhance international connectivity, boost inbound tourism to India and open access to the western Indian Ocean region. By establishing this link, IndiGo is reinforcing Chennai’s status as a pivotal gateway for the broader region.
Booking and travel advisories
Reservations for the new service are open through the airline’s website, mobile application, and authorised agents. To enhance passenger comfort, the carrier is providing various add-on services, including pre-booked meals, seat selection, flexible fares and up front options for added comfort and flexibility.
Due to the international nature of the destination, the airline has issued a standard reminder for passengers. Travellers have been advised to check visa requirements and travel guidelines before finalising bookings to ensure compliance with French overseas territory regulations.
