From Abu Dhabi to Oslo: PM Modi's diplomatic sprint to shore up India's energy and trade ties

PM Modi will undertake a five-nation visit from May 15 to 20, covering the UAE, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy, with a strong focus on energy security, trade, investment and strategic cooperation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a five-nation visit from May 15 to 20, covering the United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy, with a strong focus on energy security, trade, investment and strategic cooperation.

The visit comes at a time of
growing geopolitical tensions due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has disrupted global supply chains and triggered concerns over rising crude oil prices following the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

During a press briefing, the Ministry of External Affairs said that the Prime Minister’s visit aims to deepen India’s partnerships with key countries across the Gulf and Europe while strengthening economic and strategic cooperation in sectors such as clean energy, defence, technology and resilient supply chains.

UAE visit to focus on energy and trade

PM Modi will begin his visit in the UAE on May 15, where he will hold talks with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The discussions are expected to focus heavily on energy cooperation and regional developments, especially in light of the ongoing tensions in Gulf. The two leaders will also review the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and explore ways to expand trade and investment ties.

The UAE is India’s third-largest trade partner and seventh-largest source of investment. Officials also said that the welfare of the more than 4.5 million Indians living in the UAE would be discussed during the visit.

Strong push for Europe ties

In the second leg of the tour, the PM will visit the Netherlands from May 15 to 17 and hold talks with Prime Minister Rob Jetten. Discussions will cover defence, semiconductors, green hydrogen, innovation and water cooperation.

The Prime Minister will then travel to Sweden, where he will meet Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and jointly address the European Round Table for Industry along with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

From Sweden, PM Modi will head to Norway for the 3rd India-Nordic Summit in Oslo on May 19. Leaders from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Sweden and Norway will participate in the summit, which will focus on technology, green transition, renewable energy, sustainability, defence, space and Arctic cooperation.

The Norway visit will also mark the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 43 years.

Italy visit to conclude tour

In the final leg, the PM will visit Italy from May 19 to 20 at the invitation of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

The two sides are expected to review progress under the India-Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029, with discussions likely to focus on defence, clean energy, investment, innovation and science and technology cooperation.

The MEA said that the broader tour would further strengthen India’s engagement with Europe, particularly after the recent conclusion of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, while also helping India secure stronger economic and energy partnerships during a period of global uncertainty.
