A legendary 27-year legacy at Microsoft

Born in Puducherry, India, Somasegar earned his bachelor’s degree from Anna University in Chennai before moving to the United States to complete his master’s degree in Computer Engineering at Louisiana State University.

He joined Microsoft in January 1989, kicking off a stellar 27-year tenure that saw him become one of the most respected figures in the company’s history.

He contributed directly to eight major releases of Windows, playing a key role in the architectural development of Windows NT. He was also instrumental in establishing Microsoft’s international footprint, notably founding the highly successful India Development Center (IDC) in Hyderabad in 1998.

As the Corporate Vice President of Microsoft’s Developer Division, he oversaw massive foundational developer suites, including Visual Studio and the .NET framework, effectively shaping how millions of engineers worldwide write code.

Prominent Silicon Valley figures and White House AI adviser Sriram Krishnan also shared emotional tributes on social media, describing Somasegar as a rare, deeply compassionate mentor who proactively spotted young talent out of undergraduate programmes and launched their careers.

After retiring from Microsoft in 2015, Somasegar shifted into venture capital by joining Madrona Venture Group. Over the next decade, he established himself as a premier investor in artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud infrastructure, and intelligent software applications.
