Who is Dr Pradeep Singh Rajpurohit?
Dr Rajpurohit, a 2004-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, took charge as India’s High Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago on October 6, 2023. In addition to his role in Port of Spain, he also serves concurrently as India’s High Commissioner to Grenada and the Commonwealth of Dominica.
Before this assignment, he worked in New Delhi as Director General (Joint Secretary) overseeing the West Asia region and North Africa between July 2021 and September 2023.
Over the course of his diplomatic career, Dr Rajpurohit has held several important overseas postings. He served as India’s Ambassador to Iraq from 2017 to 2019 and later as Deputy Ambassador to Saudi Arabia between 2019 and 2020. Earlier, he handled political affairs at the Indian Embassy in Berlin from 2014 to 2017, and also served in Abu Dhabi and Cairo in junior diplomatic roles. During his posting in Egypt, he completed a diploma in Arabic from the American University in Cairo.
At the MEA headquarters, he has also worked in divisions dealing with BIMSTEC and SAARC, as well as India’s development partnership initiatives with developing nations.
Originally trained as a doctor, Dr Rajpurohit earned his MBBS degree from Dr S N Medical College in Jodhpur before briefly working in the healthcare sector ahead of joining the diplomatic service.
He is married to Manju Rajpurohit and is a father of three children — two daughters and a son. He speaks English and Hindi fluently and also has working knowledge of Arabic.
His appointment assumes significance at a time when India and Bahrain are expanding cooperation across trade, energy security, defence, investment and diaspora engagement. Bahrain remains an important partner for India in the Gulf region, hosting a large Indian expatriate community and serving as a key economic and maritime hub in West Asia.
India and Bahrain have maintained close diplomatic relations for decades, with bilateral ties witnessing deeper engagement in recent years through high-level visits, security cooperation and growing commercial exchanges.
According to official data, trade between the two countries has steadily expanded, particularly in sectors such as petroleum products, food processing, construction materials, engineering goods and financial services.
The Indian community in Bahrain, estimated at over 300,000 people, forms one of the largest expatriate groups in the kingdom and plays a major role in strengthening people-to-people ties. Indian professionals and workers contribute significantly across healthcare, finance, education, construction and retail sectors in Bahrain’s economy.
Strategically, Bahrain is also important for India’s maritime and regional interests in the Gulf. Both countries cooperate on counterterrorism, maritime security and regional stability, especially amid rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia and concerns surrounding energy supply routes.
Rajpurohit’s diplomatic experience in handling bilateral relations and overseas Indian community affairs is expected to support India’s broader outreach in the Gulf region, where New Delhi has intensified engagement through trade partnerships, energy cooperation and strategic dialogue.
