As temperatures in Delhi-NCR cross 45°C, Delhi Traffic Police have rolled out a pilot heat-combat system featuring solar-powered AC helmets, portable cooling devices, hydration kits, and shaded booths to protect on-duty personnel from extreme heat stress during long outdoor shifts
As furnace-like conditions tighten their grip across the National Capital Region (NCR), sending mercury levels soaring past 45 degrees Celsius, the Delhi Traffic Police have deployed advanced wearable cooling technology to shield on-duty personnel from the life-threatening extreme heat.
In a newly launched pilot project, traffic police officers stationed at major, high-congestion roundabouts, including the Three Murti roundabout, have been equipped with specialised “AC helmets,” portable handheld and table fans, and emergency hydration kits to endure gruelling eight-hour shifts under the blazing summer sun.

High-tech armour against 45°C
The unique addition to the force’s summer gear is the solar-assisted cooling helmet. Specially engineered to protect the head, the area most vulnerable to heatstroke when uniform attire restricts body ventilation, the helmet uses a built-in, battery-powered mechanism to actively regulate temperature.
According to technical specifications released by police logistics units, the helmets are designed to lower the internal temperature around a user’s head by 8 to 12 degrees Celsius compared to the ambient outdoor environment.
Authorities have rolled out a set of heat-mitigation measures on a trial basis to protect personnel and commuters at busy traffic intersections.
These include solar-powered AC helmets designed to reduce head-zone temperatures by up to 12°C, along with portable cooling solutions such as battery-operated handheld ventilators and collar fans to help manage heat stress. Medical support has also been strengthened with the mandatory distribution of chilled water bottles and Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) at all designated booths.
In addition, structural upgrades like temporary tin sheds have been installed at crossings to provide shade and reduce risks from sudden dust storms and potential electrical hazards.
