Amid ongoing attacks on religious minorities in Bangladesh, another Hindu man was on Wednesday assaulted and set on fire, according to reports.
Since the ongoing wave of targeted violence began last month, at least three Hindu men have been lynched in Bangladesh.
In the latest case, a mob allegedly intercepted a 50-year-old man, Khokon Das, and assaulted him with sharp weapons and set him on fire in Shariatpur district, as reported by Moneycontrol and The Times of India.
Previously, three Hindu men —Dipu Chandra Das, Amrit Mondal, and Bajendra Biswas— were killed last month.
On December 18, fellow garment factory workers joined the locals to kill Das in Mymensingh district after accusing him of blasphemy. The police said the mob first beat him to death and then set his body on fire.
On December 24, a mob beat Mondal to death in Rajbari district. The police said the mob lynched Mondal after accusing him of running an extortion business.
On December 29, a fellow factory worker shot to death Biswas in Mymensingh.
While cyclic violence against Hindus and other religious minorities has been going on ever since street violence ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, such violence has intensified since last month and is part of a broader wave of violence targeted at political, cultural, and religious groups and institutions that do not toe the line of hardliner Islamists who have amassed power in Bangladesh since Hasina’s ouster.
Since the news of anti-Hasina student leader Osman Hadi’s death broke last month, Bangladesh has been in the grips of nationwide street violence in which politicians, media organisations, cultural organisations, and religious minorities have been targeted. Moreover, mobs have also repeatedly targeted Indian diplomatic missions, most notably the Assistant Indian High Commission in Chattogram district.
