The powerful blast set the vehicle ablaze and spread to three to four nearby cars, officials said, prompting authorities to sound a high alert across the national capital.
Reports citing sources suggest that several people sustained injuries in the incident, some of them critically.
The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) received a call around 6:55 pm and deployed seven fire tenders, which managed to bring the blaze under control within a short time. Thick smoke engulfed the area before police and fire teams contained the situation.
Location of the blast: The explosion reportedly occurred in a car parked outside the Lal Quila (Red Fort) metro station. The exact cause and nature of the blast are yet to be determined.
Police at the scene: A team from the Delhi Police Special Cell rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area as forensic and bomb disposal squads began their investigation.
