Six workers were killed and five others injured after an explosion at a steel plant in Chhattisgarh’s Balodabazar Bhatapara district.
At least six workers lost their lives and five others were injured after a powerful explosion ripped through a steel plant in Chhattisgarh’s Balodabazar Bhatapara district on Thursday. The blast occurred at the Real Ispat and Power Limited facility in Bakulahi village, located within the Bhatapara rural area. Local authorities and rescue teams were immediately deployed to the site as news of the incident broke.
Details of the incident
According to officials, the explosion took place inside the Dust Settling Chamber, an area designed to collect industrial particles during steel production. The impact of the blast caused molten material and hot dust to rain down on workers carrying out their duties nearby. Six labourers reportedly died on the spot, while five others received severe burn injuries.
District Collector Deepak Soni confirmed the casualties and said that local police, along with senior administrative officers, had reached the plant to oversee relief efforts. Preliminary assessments suggest that a sudden technical failure in the chamber may have triggered the explosion, though a detailed inquiry will determine the exact cause.
Rescue efforts and medical response
Emergency teams rushed the injured workers to the Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences in Bilaspur, where they are undergoing treatment. Officials described the condition of some of the victims as critical but stable. A dedicated medical team has been assigned to monitor their recovery.
Collector Soni informed the press that the district administration is coordinating with the plant management to ensure full support for the victims’ families. Local police have cordoned off the site, and safety engineers have begun inspecting the damaged unit to prevent further hazards.

Government response and investigation
State Health Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal expressed deep grief over the tragedy and extended condolences to the bereaved families. In an official statement, he said he had spoken with the district collector and directed that every possible measure be taken to provide quality medical care to the injured.
The minister also ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances leading to the explosion and assured that strict action would be taken against anyone found responsible for lapses in safety protocols. “The state government stands firmly with the affected families and will provide all necessary assistance during this difficult time,” Jaiswal said.
The incident has brought renewed attention to industrial safety in the state, with concerns being raised over workplace standards and emergency preparedness in factories handling hazardous materials.
