Indian govt issues directive to strengthen gas pipeline network amid Hormuz crisis

India moves to strengthen its natural gas pipeline network amid disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to secure supplies, improve distribution, and cushion the economy from global energy shocks

The Government of India has issued fresh directions to accelerate the development of natural gas pipeline infrastructure, responding to supply uncertainties triggered by disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz. The idea behind the move is to strengthen the country’s energy security and ensure smoother distribution of gas across regions.

Under the
new framework, authorities have been asked to fast-track approvals and execution of pipeline projects, removing bottlenecks that often delay expansion.

The focus is on building a more robust and interconnected gas grid that can efficiently transport fuel from import terminals to consumption centres across the country.

Cushioning against global shocks

The urgency comes as tensions in West Asia have disrupted key energy supply routes, particularly through the
Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil and gas shipments.

By expanding domestic pipeline capacity, India is looking to reduce vulnerabilities linked to international supply disruptions and volatile energy markets.

Boost to city gas distribution

The government’s push is also expected to support the expansion of city gas distribution networks, improving access to piped natural gas (PNG) for households and compressed natural gas (CNG) for transport.

A stronger pipeline backbone will help ensure consistent supply to urban and industrial centres.

Officials cited by ANI say the decision is part of a larger plan to increase the share of natural gas in India’s energy mix while making the system more resilient.

With global uncertainties persisting, the emphasis is now on building infrastructure that can absorb shocks and maintain stable supply for consumers and industries alike.
