Assembly Election Results 2026 LIVE: Counting of votes to kick off today in Kerala, TN, Bengal, Assam & Puducherry

Assembly Election Results 2026 LIVE: Votes for the Assembly elections in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry will be counted from 8 am today, with results expected by evening. However, the outcome for Bengal’s Falta seat will be declared later, as it goes to polls again on May 21

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has stated that it will ensure “the highest standards of transparency, security and efficiency” during the counting of votes scheduled for Monday. The counting covers Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry, along with bye-elections in seven Assembly constituencies across five states.

In Kerala, the voter turnout for the April 9 Assembly elections has been revised upward to 79.7 per cent after including postal ballots from service voters, Chief Electoral Officer Rathan U Kelkar said on Sunday.

The Election Commission has also directed a fresh round of polling at all 285 booths in West Bengal’s Falta Assembly constituency on May 21. This comes even as repolling was conducted on Saturday in 15 booths across the Paschim Magrahat and Diamond Harbour constituencies.

Separately, the counting of votes will begin at 8 am on Monday, starting with postal ballots before moving on to Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

Spotlight on West Bengal as four states and one Union Territory gear up for vote counting

Key states in focus

In
West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faces a crucial test after record turnout. Her party, the TMC, is defending a strong mandate, while the BJP is pushing for its first government in the state. Exit polls are divided, with many favouring the BJP, though some predict a TMC win.

Assam saw high turnout in a direct contest between the BJP-led NDA and the Congress. Exit polls largely suggest an advantage for Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and a possible third term.

In Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan is aiming for a third straight term, but most exit polls indicate a comeback for the Congress-led UDF.

Tamil Nadu recorded a historic turnout, with Chief Minister MK Stalin seeking re-election. Polls largely favour the ruling DMK alliance despite some anti-incumbency.

In Puducherry, the NDA is projected to have the edge, with Chief Minister N Rangasamy aiming to retain power.

These elections are the first major political test after the 2024 general elections and will shape the national narrative midway through the Modi government’s third term. Outcomes in Bengal, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, in particular, could significantly shift political momentum.
