PM Modi urges end to political violence after BJP's Bengal landslide: 'Democracy has won'

The BJP won 66 seats in the 294-member West Bengal assembly and was leading in 138 constituencies, while the TMC bagged 30 and was ahead in 53.

After the BJP’s sweeping victory in West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday called for an end to political violence, saying the mandate showed that “democracy has won” and urging all parties to respect the people’s verdict and work toward peace and stability in the state.

Dressed in a traditional dhoti-kurta, PM Modi on Monday hailed the BJP’s sweeping victory in West Bengal, calling it a triumph of “democracy and constitutional bodies,” and framing the verdict as a mandate for governance-driven politics.

“As a party worker, I share the joy of every BJP worker. Today is a special day in many ways… a day of trust in India’s great democracy, in the politics of performance, and in the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat’,” he said.

Urging restraint after the BJP’s sweeping victory in West Bengal, PM Modi said the moment called for “badlav (change), not badla (revenge),” and “bhavishya (future), not bhay (fear),” as he sought to strike a conciliatory note while outlining priorities for governance. Addressing party workers, he assured citizens that a BJP government would work “day and night” for the state, promising a safer environment for women, jobs for youth, curbs on migration, swift approval of the Ayushman Bharat in the first cabinet meeting, and strict action against infiltrators.
