Beyond the battlefield: Indian peacekeepers lead rescue after DR Congo fire

Indian Army peacekeepers deployed under the United Nations stepped in swiftly to rescue civilians after a fire broke out in the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo, highlighting their role beyond traditional security duties.

The incident took place in a densely populated residential area, where a sudden blaze threatened multiple homes and residents. Acting quickly, Indian troops on the ground managed to control the situation and prevent further damage.

According to an official statement, the response was led by personnel of the Indian Rapid Deployment Battalion (INDRDB) stationed at the BFI–CHU Camp in Goma.

Swift response prevents major damage

The fire broke out at Bujovi Quarter on Bunyerezo Avenue after an electrical short circuit. The flames quickly spread to three nearby houses, raising fears of casualties in the crowded locality.

Indian peacekeepers rushed to the scene and immediately took control. A Quick Reaction Force secured the area and evacuated around 10 to 12 residents to safety, ensuring that people were moved away from danger as quickly as possible.

At the same time, a firefighting team from the unit began efforts to control the blaze while also searching the affected houses for anyone who might have been trapped inside.

Rescue and medical aid

During the operation, troops provided first aid to six to seven civilians who had suffered injuries in the incident. Their timely medical assistance helped stabilise those affected before further medicak help could arrive.

In addition to their own efforts, the Indian contingent coordinated with firefighting teams from a nearby LAVA site, guiding them to the location and ensuring that the response remained organised and effective.

This coordination played a key role in bringing the fire under control before it could spread further.

Peacekeepers as first responders

The successful operation once again underlines the broader role played by the Indian UN peacekeepers in conflict zones. Apart from maintaining peace and security, they are often among the first responders during emergencies affecting local communities.

Their quick action in Goma helped prevent loss of life and limited damage to property, reinforcing their reputation for professionalism and readiness in difficult circumstances.

The incident serves as a reminder that peacekeeping missions are not limited to the battlefield alone, but also involve critical humanitarian responsibilities aimed at protecting civilians and supporting local populations in times of crisis.
