Financial Planning Services in India

With monthly SIP contributions at ₹32,490 crore, the firm explains how a financial plan connects regular investing with a family’s long-term goals.

Gurugram (Haryana) [India], November 3: Indian households are committing more money to regular investing. Data released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) on 12 October 2026 shows that monthly SIP contributions reached a record ₹32,490 crore in September, with more than 10 crore contributing SIP accounts. Alpha Capital, a SEBI-registered investment adviser and multi-family office based in Gurugram, says this growth makes it important for families to connect their investments to a clear financial plan.

The same month, the industry’s assets under management fell 5.1% to ₹82.64 lakh crore, largely because of market-related valuation losses and debt-fund outflows. Equity schemes nevertheless attracted net inflows of ₹38,307 crore. Alpha Capital sees this as a reminder that regular investing must be supported by an understanding of when the money will be needed and how much risk a family can afford to take.

“Most families who come to us are not short of investments. They are short of a plan. It is common to find eight or ten mutual funds holding largely the same stocks, insurance policies bought as investments, and a retirement number nobody has actually calculated. Financial planning is the work of connecting all of that to specific goals and specific dates.”

A household’s finances may include salary income, employee stock options, rental income, a family business, overseas assets and inherited property. Investment choices have also expanded beyond fixed deposits and traditional insurance to mutual funds, portfolio management services, alternative investment funds, REITs, InvITs, listed bonds and gold ETFs. Without periodic review, these holdings can accumulate without a clear purpose or an assessment of their combined risks.

Continuity matters too. Based on AMFI data, the SIP stoppage ratio was about 81.1% in August 2026 and eased to 78.5% in September. This compares SIPs discontinued or completed during a month with new registrations; it is not the share of all investors abandoning their SIPs. The data does not establish why individual plans ended. Alpha Capital’s view is that linking an SIP to a defined goal gives families a clearer basis for deciding whether to continue, adjust or stop it.

Cash flow and budgeting. A clear view of income, fixed commitments and discretionary spending, supported by an emergency reserve suited to the household’s expenses and income stability.

Goal-based investing. Each goal needs a time horizon, an estimate of the amount required and an appropriate asset allocation. Money needed in two years should not carry the same investment risk as money intended for a goal twenty years away.

Retirement planning. The retirement corpus should reflect expected living costs, inflation, longevity and healthcare needs. The plan should also set out how withdrawals will be funded after active income stops.

Risk management. Adequate term life and health cover, a review of existing policies and an assessment of concentration in a single stock, sector, property or business.

Tax planning. Investment and withdrawal decisions should account for applicable tax rules throughout the year, reducing the need for hurried decisions near the financial year-end.

Estate and succession planning. Wills, nominations and, where appropriate, trust structures should be reviewed together, with legal advice where needed, to support the family’s wishes for transferring wealth.

Alpha Capital follows a five-stage planning process. It begins with understanding the client’s goals, followed by an assessment of income, expenses, assets, liabilities, cash flow and net worth. The firm then develops a customised plan, supports its implementation and reviews it at regular intervals. Clients can track their holdings through the firm’s consolidated portfolio app.

As a multi-family office, Alpha Capital combines financial planning with broader services, including investment management, estate planning and trust administration, accounting and reporting, income tax planning and compliance, and risk management. The scope is agreed with each family, with relevant professional support where required. The firm also works on multi-generational planning, preparing younger family members for the responsibilities of wealth and planning charitable giving.

“A plan written once and filed away does very little. Incomes change, children change their minds about careers, tax rules change and markets reprice. Our job is to revisit the plan as life moves, so that the decisions a family makes in a difficult year are guided by the plan and not by the headlines.”

Alpha Capital recommends that families clarify the following points before appointing an adviser.

1. Is the adviser registered with SEBI? Check the legal entity and registration details on SEBI’s website. Investment advice for consideration generally requires registration under the SEBI (Investment Advisers) Regulations, 2013, subject to applicable exemptions.

2. How is the adviser paid? Ask for a clear explanation of advisory fees and how any product distribution is handled. SEBI’s framework requires client-level segregation of advisory and distribution services for non-individual investment advisers.

3. Is the complaint record available? Registered investment advisers are required to disclose investor-complaint data on their websites. Review the record and the process for resolving concerns.²

4. Does the plan cover the full financial position? It should consider insurance, liabilities, taxes, real estate and succession needs alongside market-linked investments.

5. How often will the plan be reviewed? Agree on a review schedule and the changes in family circumstances that would call for an earlier review.

In a 2015 announcement, Alpha Capital stated its commitment to complying with the CFA Code of Ethics. The firm continues to emphasise ethics, research and advice suited to each family’s circumstances.

The firm’s reported recognitions include the Money Today–FPCIL Best Financial Planner of the Year award in 2013 and 2015, the CNBC Best Financial Advisor award in 2011, 2013 and 2014, and the Citywealth Asian Advisor of the Year award in 2013. Its website lists Soumen Basu, former Executive Chairman of Manpower India, among its advisers.
