In a first, CDS Anil Chauhan tours UK for talks with British civil and military leadership

India’s Chief of Defence Staff, Anil Chauhan, is on a three-day official visit to the United Kingdom starting April 19, marking the first time an Indian CDS has visited the UK in an official capacity.

India’s Chief of Defence Staff, Anil Chauhan, is on a three-day official visit to the United Kingdom starting April 19, marking the first time an Indian CDS has visited the UK in an official capacity. The visit is seen as an important step in strengthening defence ties between the two countries.

During the visit, General Chauhan will be received by the UK’s Chief of Defence Staff, Richard Knighton. Discussions between the two sides are expected to focus on expanding cooperation in areas such as joint training, military operations, and defence industry partnerships.

According to ANI, General Chauhan will also meet senior civil and military leaders in the UK, along with representatives from the British defence industry.

The meetings are aimed at advancing discussions on co-production and enhancing collaboration between the two countries.

As part of his visit, the Indian CDS is scheduled to visit the Royal College of Defence Studies, where he will interact with a multinational group of students.

These engagements are expected to promote greater understanding and exchange of ideas on global security challenges.

The visit comes amid growing defence cooperation between India and the UK, following several high-level military exchanges this year. This includes the visit of the UK Chief of the Air Staff, Harv Smyth, to India in March.

British High Commissioner to India, Lindy Cameron, described the visit as a “landmark” moment in bilateral defence relations. She told ANI that the visit reflects the trust and ambition driving the partnership, adding that both countries are working to strengthen interoperability, encourage innovation, and support a free and secure Indo-Pacific region.

Cameron also noted that cooperation is expanding across multiple areas, including joint training, defence industry ties, and strategic dialogue. She emphasised that India remains a key defence partner for the UK and that both sides aim to build on this momentum in the coming months.

Meanwhile, Commodore Chris Saunders, Defence Adviser at the British High Commission, told the news agency that the visit highlights the progress made in defence ties. He said it offers an opportunity to deepen military-to-military engagement, expand training cooperation, and explore stronger defence industrial collaboration.

Saunders added that both countries see defence as an “engine for growth” and are looking to support India’s goal of self-reliance while strengthening bilateral cooperation.
