Indian family seeks return of mariner stranded in West Asia amid war

The peaceful town of Haripad in Kerala has become a backdrop for a harrowing wait as the family of Jerin George, a young Indian mariner, seeks government intervention to rescue him from a precarious situation. George is currently trapped aboard an Iranian vessel amidst the escalating volatility of the West Asian conflict. His parents, consumed by worry and facing the uncertainty of international warfare, have made a public plea for the safe repatriation of their son, whose return has been indefinitely delayed by the regional crisis.

A journey interrupted by war

George departed from his home eight months ago to pursue his career on an Iranian ship, with his family eagerly anticipating his return by early March. However, the geopolitical landscape shifted dramatically when major hostilities erupted in February.

This sudden outbreak of violence forced his vessel to retreat to Iranian waters, effectively cutting off his path home. Since that time, the young man has remained confined to the ship, unable to secure passage back to India as the conflict continues to destabilise the region.

The struggle for survival at sea

The physical and emotional toll on those stranded is becoming increasingly evident. Communication remains sporadic and limited to brief voice calls, leaving the family without the comfort of seeing his face. His mother, overwhelmed by the situation, shared the grim reality of his current living conditions.

She explained that George was managing to survive somehow as food resources were scarce in the ship and they have been able to talk to him over the phone a few times.

The lack of visual contact has added to their distress, as she noted that we have not been able to see him as videocall was not possible. Through tears, she expressed the simple, heartbreaking desire of a parent in agony, stating that I just want my son to come back to me.

Seeking help through political channels

Recognising the need for high level diplomatic intervention, George’s father has begun reaching out to influential political figures to champion their cause. The family has formally submitted written appeals to the Congress general secretary KC Venugopal and the prominent leader Ramesh Chennithala.

They hope that by engaging these representatives, the Indian government can coordinate with international maritime and diplomatic bodies to facilitate a safe exit for George. His father remains resolute in his mission, reiterating the singular focus of their efforts by stating that we want him to be returned to us.

As the shadow of the West Asian war looms over many such families, the George household remains in a state of prayerful vigil, hoping that the authorities will act swiftly to bring their son home from the dwindling supplies and the dangers of the Iranian coastline.
