In a major upset, TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday suffered a significant defeat in her home constituency of Bhabanipur, losing to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari by a margin of around 15,000 votes.
According to News18, citing final counting figures, Adhikari secured 73,463 votes, while Banerjee finished second with 58,349 votes, marking a decisive result in what had been considered a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress chief.
Adhikari, who had earlier defeated Banerjee in Nandigram during the 2021 Assembly elections, once again emerged as a key challenger, reinforcing his reputation as a formidable opponent.
The result is being seen as a major political shift, as Bhabanipur had been Banerjee’s constituency since 2011 and a symbol of her influence in south Bengal.
Her defeat in the seat is expected to have significant implications for the state’s political landscape.
Mamata accuses BJP of looting over 100 seats
Earlier speaking to reporters, Banerjee termed the BJP’s landslide victory in the state polls “immoral” and alleged that the mandate in more than 100 seats was “looted”.

“We will bounce back,” PTI quoted her as saying while walking out of the counting centre at her Bhabanipur Assembly constituency.
Banerjee had reached the counting centre at Sakhawat Memorial Government Girls’ High School on Lord Sinha Road in the afternoon amid allegations by the Trinamool Congress that one of its counting agents had been forced out of the venue.
As she exited the centre, the TMC supremo was greeted with “Jai Shree Ram” slogans by BJP supporters, buoyed by their party’s sweeping performance in the polls and further encouraged by the lead secured by Suvendu Adhikari in Bhabanipur.
A visibly distraught Banerjee told reporters that the BJP’s victory was “immoral”. “They have looted more than 100 seats,” she alleged.
The TMC chief also alleged that the “EC’s activities with the help of central forces in connivance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah were illegal”.
Alleging that she faced criticism for “speaking out against the EC’s malpractices”, Banerjee said, “I lodged a complaint with Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal, but to no avail.” “The CCTV was switched off while our agents were not allowed to be inside the counting centre,” she claimed.
Adhikari dedicates win to Bengal, PM Modi
Meanwhile, Adhikari greeted his supporters after winning the Bhabanipur and Nandigram seats with landslide margins.
