Mumbai knife attack: US-returned man arrested for stabbing two, ATS probes radicalisation angle

A man in Maharashtra’s Mira Road allegedly attacked two security guards after asking about their religion and whether they could recite the kalma, police said. The accused was arrested within 90 minutes.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing two security guards in Mira Road near Mumbai after questioning them about their religion, police said.

The incident occurred early Sunday morning at an under-construction building in Mira Road East, where the guards were on duty.

According to a report by India Today, the accused, identified as Jaib Zubair Ansari, asked the guards their names and religion and then questioned whether they could recite the Kalma, an Islamic declaration of faith.

When they said they could not, he allegedly attacked them with a knife. Police are examining whether the incident has any ideological or extremist links.

The victims, Rajkumar Mishra and Subroto Sen, were on duty around 4 am when the accused approached them and suddenly turned violent, officials said.

Guards injured, under treatment

Mishra suffered serious injuries, including damage to his intestines, while Sen sustained minor injuries to his back. Despite being injured, Sen managed to hide inside a security cabin, which likely prevented further harm.

After the attack, Ansari fled the scene. Sen alerted the police, and both injured guards were taken to hospital for treatment. Police said that their condition is stable and they are continuing to receive medical care.

Accused arrested within 90 minutes

Police said a team reached the spot soon after receiving information and began scanning CCTV footage from the area. Using the footage, investigators identified Ansari and tracked him to his rented residence in the Naya Nagar area of Mira Road East.

He was arrested within one-and-a-half hours of the incident. A case was registered at Naya Nagar Police Station based on Sen’s complaint.

During the investigation, police found that the accused had allegedly been watching propaganda videos linked to extremist groups. Officials are now analysing his online activity and background.

ATS takes over investigation

In a press note, the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) said that, as per orders of the Director General of Police, the investigation has been transferred to the ATS.

The case includes sections 109, 118(2), and 196(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad is now conducting a detailed probe to determine whether the attack had any larger ideological or extremist links.

According to the report, Ansari had studied in the United States until 2019 before returning to India. He was living alone in Mira Road, and his landlord had reportedly asked him to vacate the flat by May 5.

Police also said that until a few months ago, he worked as a teacher at a coaching centre, where he taught chemistry and mathematics.

Authorities have urged citizens not to spread rumours or unverified information about the case. They warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone sharing misinformation as the investigation continues.

‘Case of self radicalisation’

Commenting on the act, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said that preliminary findings suggest that the accused may have undergone self-radicalisation through online content, books and other material.

He added that investigators are probing possible links and influences, and whether others may be involved.
