Phones beep across India as government tests new nationwide emergency alert system

India on Saturday carried out a nationwide test of its new emergency alert system, sending a loud beep and warning message to millions of mobile phones.

The alert, which appeared around 11:41 AM, carried the heading “Extremely Severe Alert” and was accompanied by a sharp sound. Many users took to social media to ask if it was a real emergency, before authorities clarified that it was only a test.

The exercise marked the launch of a new mobile-based disaster alerting system aimed at improving how warnings are sent to the public during emergencies.

Government tests new alert system

The test was part of a nationwide rollout led by the Government of India. The system has been developed by the Department of Telecommunications under the Ministry of Communications, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia have formally launched the system as part of efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness.

According to a press release by the government, the new system will help send alerts quickly to people during natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and cyclones, as well as man-made emergencies like gas leaks.

Alert message

The message received by users clearly stated that it was only a test. It read:
“India launches Cell Broadcast using indigenous technology for instant disaster alerting service for its citizens. No action is required… This is a test message.”

The Department of Telecommunications also reassured people through social media, asking them not to panic and to ignore the message if received multiple times.

How the system works?

The new system uses Cell Broadcast (CB) technology along with SMS alerts. Unlike regular text messages, cell broadcast sends alerts to all mobile phones in a specific area at the same time. This ensures faster delivery, especially in urgent situations.

The system is part of the Integrated Alert System called ‘Sachet’, developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT). It follows global standards recommended by the International Telecommunication Union.

Authorities said that the system is already active across all states and union territories and has been used to send billions of alerts in multiple Indian languages.

Why this matters?

According to the government, the new alert system can play a crucial role in saving lives by providing real-time warnings. It is especially useful in situations where every second matters, such as tsunamis, lightning strikes, or chemical accidents.

By combining SMS and cell broadcast technology, the government aims to ensure that critical information reaches citizens quickly and reliably.
