Retail inflation at 2.75% in January as India unveils new CPI series with 2024 base

India’s retail inflation eased to 2.75 per cent in January 2026, as the government rolled out a revamped Consumer Price Index (CPI) series with 2024 as the new base year, marking the comprehensive overhaul of the inflation gauge in over a decade.

Data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on Wednesday showed that year-on-year inflation based on the new CPI stood at 2.75 per cent in January, with rural inflation at 2.73 per cent and urban at 2.77 per cent.

Food inflation, measured by the Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI), came in lower at 2.13 per cent.
