The Uttar Pradesh government has approved a minimum wage hike across worker categories in the wake of recent unrest in Noida, with the revised rates taking effect retrospectively from April 1, officials, cited by news agency PTI, said on Tuesday.
Gautam Buddh Nagar District Magistrate Medha Roopam said the increase was recommended by a high-powered committee and cleared by the chief minister late Monday night. Under the revised structure, unskilled workers in Gautam Buddh Nagar and Ghaziabad will now earn Rs 13,690 per month, up from Rs 11,313, while semi-skilled workers will receive Rs 15,059 and skilled workers Rs 16,868, as per the official statement.
In a separate but related development, the protests intensified further as domestic workers, including maids working in housing societies, gathered in Cleo County, Sector 121. They demanded higher wages and better working conditions, said PTI.
Protesters said their wages no longer keep pace with rising living costs, while also citing limited leave and heavy workloads. Many added they would not resume work until their demands are addressed.
Authorities have deployed a heavy police presence across affected areas to prevent further escalation.
This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
