After TCS Nashik row, Tech Mahindra debunks ‘mini Pakistan’ allegations. What’s going on?

Tech Mahindra is embroiled in a new controversy. In a social media post, a reported employee from its Mumbai office alleged a ‘mini Pakistan-like’ atmosphere at the workplace. These allegations come after sexual harassment and forced religious conversion complaints emerged from TCS’ Nashik office

Even as new details emerge in the probe into the sexual harassment and religious coercion at Tata Consultancy Services’ Nashik BPO, a new set of religious bias allegations has emerged against Tech Mahindra.

As three more victims have come forward in the TCS matter, a social media post went viral in which it is alleged that Tech Mahindra had declared its office pantry a “footwear-free zone” until Ramzan for prayers and iftar.

What do we know of these claims? How has the Anand Mahindra-led company reacted? Here’s what we found out so far.

Religious bias allegations against Tech Mahindra

The controversy began after an advocate at the Bombay High Court, Ashutosh Dubey, put out a post on the microblogging platform X, alleging that the Tech Mahindra office in Mumbai’s Goregaon practised unequal workplace policies and religious favouritism during festivals.

He said the message had been sent to him by an anonymous employee of the company.

In the post that Dubey put up, the reported Tech Mahidra employee states that a “mini Pakistan-like” atmosphere allegedly prevails at the company’s Goregaon campus in Mumbai.

He then put up a second post that made similar allegations, although from its Telangana office. Another employee shared an Instagram post, which showed the pantry at the office being declared a “footwear-free zone” until Ramzan for prayers and iftar.

The authenticity of these messages hasn’t been verified. However, claims of such nature have raised broader concerns about workplace inclusivity.

Tech Mahindra responds

Responding to the controversy, a Tech Mahindra spokesperson said: “This is with reference to recent social media posts alleging religious bias within Tech Mahindra. We take such concerns seriously and conducted an internal review, which found these claims to be inaccurate and unfounded. We confirm that the image titled ‘footwear free zone’ is not from any of our offices, and the anonymous post regarding hiring practices is false.

“At Tech Mahindra, we are firmly committed to building an inclusive, respectful workplace where every individual is treated with dignity and fairness, without discrimination of any kind, including on the basis of religion. We will continue to review our policies and processes to ensure that our values are upheld consistently, and that no coercive or inappropriate conduct is permitted or carried out in any manner whatsoever.”

TCS probe becomes bigger and wider

The allegations against Tech Mahindra have emerged after eight individuals in
Tata Consultancy Services’ (TCS) Nashik office were accused of sexual assault and religious coercion.

On Wednesday, three more victims came forward in the case and are expected to file fresh FIRs against the accused, taking the number of complaints between 12 and 14.

So far, investigations have revealed that TCS employees, Tausif Attar and
Nida Khan, manipulated and brainwashed colleagues over several years. News agency PTI reports that Attar allegedly used false promises of marriage to sexually exploit a victim while concealing that he was already married with children.

Furthermore, police allege that both accused repeatedly disparaged Hindu beliefs and pressured victims to convert, with Khan allegedly introducing young women to Attar and instructing them in Islamic practices.

Meanwhile, the Tata Group has said it is cooperating with authorities, with Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran assuring strict action against anyone found guilty. The company has also directed its COO, Aarti Subramaniam, to constitute a committee to investigate the matter thoroughly.

Reiterating its “zero-tolerance policy” towards coercion, abuse, or misconduct by employees, all Tata Group companies have been instructed to review their internal environments to identify whether any such behaviour or incidents of employee harassment exist.
