PM Modi says ‘patience, wisdom’ paid off as India-US trade deal enters last leg

PM Modi underscored the importance of the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) with the US and explained how the deal reflects continued efforts to engage at the highest level

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that the landmark trade deal with the US was a result of “patience and wisdom” that “paid off”, as he spoke to National Democratic Alliance (NDA) parliamentarians during a meeting.

According to a report byNews18, PM Modi underscored the importance of the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) with the US and explained how the deal reflects continued efforts to engage at the highest level.

US President Donald Trump announced late on Monday that Washington has reached a trade deal with India, cutting down tariffs from 50 per cent to 18 per cent, marking an end to a year-long discussion on the negotiating table.

Trump held a phone call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This phone call was followed by Potus’ major announcement. While reciprocal tariffs (25 per cent) have been reduced to 18 per cent, the penal levies that Trump imposed on India for buying Russian oil (another 25 per cent) have been cut to zero.

PM Modi felicitated by NDA MPs

During the parliamentary meeting on Tuesday, PM Modi was felicitated by NDA MPs for the successful trade agreement.

Referring to criticism from rival parties, the Prime Minister said that although the Opposition “kept bashing us,” the government remained steadfast and ultimately delivered results, proving that perseverance paid off.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman addressed the NDA leaders at the meeting, highlighting the prospects of the India-US deal and its reflection of the budget.

Soon after Trump announced the deal on his Truth Social platform, PM Modi said, “Wonderful to speak with my dear friend President Trump today. Delighted that Made in India products will now have a reduced tariff of 18%. Big thanks to President Trump on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India for this wonderful announcement. “

“When two large economies and the world’s largest democracies work together, it benefits our people and unlocks immense opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation,” he added.
