Swiss aircraft with over 200 on board catches fire during take-off at Delhi airport, 4 injured: Reports

A Swiss flight was halted amid take-off at Delhi airport after smoke was detected, prompting an emergency evacuation

In the early hours of Sunday, a Zurich-bound Swiss International Airlines flight was forced to halt its take-off at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport after smoke was noticed coming from one of its wheels. The incident, which took place at Terminal 3, led to an immediate emergency response as crew members acted quickly to contain the situation.

The aircraft, operating as Flight LX147 (DEL-ZRH), was on the runway when smoke was observed from the left wheel, prompting the crew to stop the take-off and initiate emergency procedures.

Evacuation carried out, injuries reported

There were 232 passengers on board the aircraft at the time. Passengers were evacuated using emergency slides, during which four people sustained minor injuries, according to sources, reported ANI.

Delhi Airport later confirmed that all safety measures were followed. In a statement on X, it said, “In the early hours of this morning, a full emergency was declared at Delhi Airport involving Swiss International Airlines flight LX 147 (DEL-ZRH) on Runway 28/10. All prescribed safety protocols were promptly executed, and passengers were safely evacuated. Airport operations remained unaffected.”

Authorities were alerted at 2:06 am about a “full hydraulic emergency” on Runway 28. Five fire tenders were rushed to the site, and officials said the situation was brought under control. The aircraft was safely handled, with the response continuing until around 3:30 am.

The incident follows a previous emergency at the same airport on March 28, when an IndiGo flight made an emergency landing after an engine failure-like situation. The flight, travelling from Visakhapatnam to Delhi, prompted a response from the Delhi Fire Service after an alert was received at 10:53 am, according to police.
